Turkmenistan has initiated a high-level meeting on cooperation in the field of sustainable transport

A high-level meeting on cooperation in the field of sustainable transport initiated by Turkmenistan was held in the Hall of the UN General Assembly.

Heads of specialized international organizations, heads of national ministries and departments of the transport sector, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions of the UN member states took part in the meeting convened by the President of the UN General Assembly D. Francis within the framework of the Sustainable Development Week.

Noting the active role of Turkmenistan in promoting the global transport agenda, the participants drew attention to the challenges facing the world community in the field of sustainable transport development. The importance of joint coordinated actions to ensure affordable, affordable and sustainable transport for all was noted, which should be the main goal in the action plan for the implementation of the UN Decade on Sustainable Transport for 2026-2035.

As a foundation for the implementation of joint practical steps by the world community, building international cooperation in the field of transport, the decisions of the UN General Assembly, adopted on the initiative of Turkmenistan, on the proclamation of the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport for 2026-2035, the establishment of World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26, adopted documents following the results of the UN Global Conferences on Sustainable Transport in Ashgabat in 2016 and Beijing in 2021.

Noting the importance of holding a high-level meeting on one of the key areas of implementation of the global Development Agenda until 2030 on the initiative of Turkmenistan for the first time at the site of the UN General Assembly, the speakers noted the need to use this opportunity to build a high-level multilateral transport dialogue in order to jointly develop strategies to achieve transport sustainability worldwide, develop reliable infrastructure, and share best practices experience.

During the meeting, the national delegations of the UN member states also touched upon the following issues of multilateral cooperation in the field of transport:

Increasing investments in the development of transport infrastructure, communication technologies, building expert capacity and developing the regulatory framework for cooperation in the field of transport;

Development and improvement of multimodal transport systems, transit and transport corridors, international logistics hubs;

Integration of sustainable transport policy into climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, promotion of environmentally friendly modes of transport;

Expanding access to modern forms of public transport;

The need to provide affordable, low-cost and environmentally friendly transport services at the national level, taking into account the social aspects of transport development.

Following the meeting, the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly will prepare a summary report and recommendations.
