During his working visit to the United States, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov participated in the high-level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Organization's founding. The event, held in the General Assembly Hall, brought together heads of state and representatives of the international community, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports.
The meeting opened with performances by the Sing for Hope choir, the Metropolitan Opera Choir, and pianist David Watkins. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock delivered a welcoming address, followed by a film about the history and role of the UN. Secretary-General António Guterres and a number of prominent political and public figures addressed the meeting, emphasizing the UN's importance in promoting peace, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights.
Turkmenistan, as the first state in the world whose neutrality was recognized three times by the UN General Assembly, places particular emphasis on strengthening trust and cooperation in the international arena. At Ashgabat's initiative, resolutions such as "2023 – International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace" and "2025 – International Year of Peace and Trust" were adopted, recognizing the country's contribution to strengthening global security.
The coincidence of these anniversaries – the 80th anniversary of the UN and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality – highlights the close connection between the Organization's activities and Turkmenistan's foreign policy, which is based on the principles of peace, dialogue, and equal partnership..
